Juniper Berries (Juniperus communis), known as the main ingredient in gin, is making a comeback as a seasoning, especially in the paleo diet. For your next stew juniper will add a citrusy-woodsy flavor. To make a rub for lean meats, coarsely grind juniper berries, peppercorn, chili flakes and coriander. Add salt, brown sugar and garlic to taste. A few other recipes to try are poached apples, bison pot roast or blackberry juniper jam.
